SONIC HALO: TINEKE POSTMA & GREG OSBY
Tineke Postma alt-/sopraansax, Greg Osby altsax, Florian Weber piano, Linda Oh bas, Ziv Ravitz drums
Two top musicians of international jazz join forces in Sonic Halo: alto and soprano saxophonist Tineke Postma and her mentor, ‘Blue Note Recording Artist’ Greg Osby.
Tineke Postma celebrates winning the Buma Boy Edgar Prize by bringing her American band Sonic Halo to The Netherlands. In Sonic Halo the Frisian-born saxophonist plays with phenomenal musicians from New York including her mentor Greg Osby. Two alto- and soprano players leading one band is a rare phenomenon. Sonic Halo doesn’t shy away from exploring higher regions, in a lyrical and compelling way.
Tineke Postma already made name in New York while studying at Manhattan School of Music, which led to performances and recordings with, among others, Wayne Shorter, Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington. She found a role model in Greg Osby, who continuously strives for originality while retaining his distinct, glowing tone. Osby has released over a dozen albums on the legendary label Blue Note.
‘It’s been a treat to watch gifted Dutch saxophonist Tineke Postma mature over the past decade, and this collaboration with one of her mentors, Greg Osby, reflects another intriguing phase in her development. The quintet here functions as a highly integrated ensemble, with Postma and Osby entwining soprano and alto saxophone lines around each other like vines climbing a wall’ (Downbeat).
