‘I want the listener to feel like they are in the movie’, says Theo Croker about his new album BLK2LIFE || A Future Past. He composed the record like a film score, with the trumpeter as a storyteller. The story is about his Afro-American roots and his future vision on the culture. Guests on the album include Wyclef Jean, Ari Lennox and Gary Bartz. At the BIMHUIS, Theo Croker will perform with his quartet.
Theo Coker is regarded as a great promise of American jazz, but he rather sees himself as part of a greater whole, which encompasses hip-hop, soul and afrobeat as well. At a very young age he started out as a band leader, following the example of his mentor Donald Byrd. On his breakthrough album Afro Physicist he collaborated with two other greats, vocalist DeeDee Bridgewater and trumpet hero Roy Hargrove.
