THE GLOAMING

AFTERWARDS DJ PIETER FRANSSEN AT THE CAFE
1 SET WITHOUT INTERMISSION
Iarla Ó Lionaird zang/ harmonium, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh hardanger d’amore, Martin Hayes viool/fiddle, Dennis Cahill gitaar, Thomas Bartlett piano

Breathtaking new versions of old Irish songs, by major talents of folk, contemporary music and alternative rock. ‘Minimalistic, almost sacral playing’ (de Volkskrant).

When five masters of music have a spontaneous studio session, miracles can happen, as proven by The Gloaming. Soon after the first jam session the band was hailed by The Irish Times as the new supergroup of Irish music. All expectations were generously met at their Dutch live debut at the Bimhuis last year (for the Holland Festival). These major talents from folk, contemporary music and alternative rock play breathtaking new versions of old Irish songs, ‘disguised as refined chamber music’, said de Volkskrant earlier this year, in the review of their debut album. ‘Minimalistic, almost sacral playing by meditative guitar, violin and piano.’

All members of The Gloaming are seasoned recording artists in Irish and Celtic music, some having worked with such names as Antony & the Johnsons, David Byrne and Laurie Anderson. Martin Hayes, one of the best fiddle players in the world, and guitarist Dennis Cahill have been frequent collaborators for some time. Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh plays the atypical Norwegian hardangar fiddle and Thomas ‘Doveman’ Bartlett, who has worked with indie rock band The National, provides adventurous piano playing. Instrumentals are alternated with songs, performed by vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird.

‘With the minimalism of true virtuosos they listen to each other before they contribute. Slowly cycling melodies lead to a compelling climax’ (NRC in a review of the Dutch live debut of The Gloaming, in 2013 at the Bimhuis during the Holland Festival).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
