The people of Garifuna live along the Caribbean coast in the towns of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. The CD, “Umalali: The Garifuna Women’s Project,” is a collection of extraordinary voices of Garifuna women, who tell stories of their lives through songs. Mothers and daughters were recorded in kitchens and living rooms, while singing about hurricanes, murder, the pain of childbirth and other poignant experiences. Two singers perform the songs on the CD, Sofia Blanco and Desere Diego. The concert is dedicated to Andy Palacio, the recently deceased bandleader of the Garifuna Collective.
