THE FREESONG SUITE: FAY VICTOR, Misha Mengelberg, ERNST GLERUM, WOLTER WIERBOS

Fay Victor has an unmistakably soulful voice, but she takes it in very different directions when compared to the average jazz diva. In her FreeSong Suite she improvises on the basis of compositions by Ellington, Monk and Herbie Nichols, for which she writes her own lyrics. ‘This New York-based vocalist actually stretches the definition of jazz vocals with Betty Carter, Hendrix and Sun Ra’s song-based cosmic poetry all in the mix’ (Jazzwise).
