THE COSMOSAMATICS TRIBUTE TO ERIC DOLPHY
Sonny Simmons-alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, Michael Marcus-alto saxophone, Masa Kamaguchi-double bass, Jay Rosen-drums
The seventy year old alto saxophonist Sonny Simmons used to be one of the most outspoken representatives of New York free jazz in the sixties. It shouldn’t be forgotten though, that he also played blues with T-Bone Walker and Lowell Fulson, that, no doubt, contributed to his intensively burning and melodic style. With this quartet, he shows a highly personal and broad view on the music of Eric Dolphy who was in search for musical freedom with a human heart. The previous Bimhuis concert of Sonny Simmons’ group was released as a double album in the US.
