THE BAD PLUS – ORNETTE COLEMAN’S SCIENCE FICTION
Friday17 April 2015

The bad boys of contemporary jazz pay a glowing tribute to their favorite album, Science Fiction by Ornette Coleman. ‘Brilliant, beyond versatile’ (New Yorker).

Saxophone player Ornette Coleman created a completely new universe with his album Science Fiction, a combination of melodic beauty and avant-garde openness. The groundbreaking music was captured in a bright, spacious studio recording with an impressive group of musicians including Don Cherry and Charlie Haden.

American piano trio The Bad Plus assembled an equally impressive band for their contemporary tribute to Science Fiction. The three members of The Bad Plus are renowned as brawny rule-breakers in contemporary jazz, who approach Nirvana and Aphex Twin with the same enthusiasm and energy as their self-styled version of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Science Fiction is their favorite album and for their interpretation they collaborate with three fantastic horn players, Tim Berne and Sam Newsome on saxophone and Ron Miles on trumpet.

‘The Bad Plus are technically brilliant, beyond versatile. Funny, surprising and pretty hard to pin down’ (New Yorker).

‘You gotta love these guys… one of the most distinctive group sounds in music, let alone jazz’ (Downbeat).
