The Amsterdam Real Book started off as a project to build a bridge between the new up-and-coming scene of improvisers in Amsterdam around such players as Yedo Gibson, John Dikeman and Oscar Jan Hoogland and the internationally known New Dutch Swing scene with its roots in the instant composing of Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink and Willem Breuker. Full on rock-based free improv meets lively jazz-based instant composing. The Amsterdam improvisers are famous all over the world for their groundbreaking treatment of composition within jazz. Cutting-edge, playful and smart. For tonight’s concert a pool of musicians will range through the highlights of the city’s repertoire, jumping from 1930s variété to South African Kwela to the punk music of The Ex. After 3 editions of the Amsterdam Real Book on Amsterdam’s underground stages it’s high time for a ‘best of’ edition on Amsterdam’s premiere stage for jazz and improvisation: the Bimhuis.
The repertoire includes music by Misha Mengelberg, Sean Bergin, The Ex, Paul Termos, Theo Loevendie, Michael Moore, Willem Breuker, Leo Cuypers, Guus Janssen, Ab Baars, Oscar Jan Hoogland, Jack Bulterman, Joost Buis and Tristan Honsinger.
The Bimhuis restaurant
is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via
020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free
entrance).
