Young bands meet each other on the BIMHUIS stage: the quintet of acclaimed jazz guitarist Teis Semey, and all-female underground pop band The Klittens. The bands will first play their own sets, followed by a collaborative set.
As a jazz guitarist and composer, Teis Semey leans on a tripod of improvised music, punk, and Scandinavian church music. As a result, the sound of the Teis Semey Quintet is a strange but engaging potpourri of provocative and tentative music. There seems to always be something to hold on to, and it’s avant-garde without losing grasp of its rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic ambitions. His quintet features well-known Amsterdam jazz players including drummer Sun-Mi Hong, who has performed at the BIMHIS with her own band.
The Klittens are five musicians on a mission, untrained but unbothered. The result: a repertoire that reaches from dark post-punk to danceable songs. What initially started as a platform and creative outlet for political ideas, ended up in a group of friends that is growing into a professional band. The girls are slowly crawling out of the Amsterdam underground scene: they played shows in the U.K. with Bull, SASAMI and Tacocat, and they have performed with Dutch bands such as Personal Trainer, Pip Blom and Global Charming.
