Taraf de Haïdouks might well be the most exciting Balkan band around; the British press even speaks of ‘Best Gypsy band in the world’ (The Independent). The Rumanian group consists of nine brilliant singers and musicians, absolute virtuosos on violin, accordion, cimbalom and double bass. They come from a heritage of Roma gypsy’s who have been passing on their music from one generation to the next. Around the 1990s they were finally discovered and over the years they’ve gathered famous fans including actor Johnny Depp and the late violinist Yehudi Menuhin. The orchestra has collaborated with the Kronos Quartet and appeared in films such as Latcho Drom, The Man Who Cried and Gypsy Caravan.

Taraf de Haïdouks, which translates as ‘honorable band of brigands’, comes from the Rumanian village of Clejani. In 1991 the group played outside of its region for the very first time and ever since the band members have managed to uphold their own traditions. Several generations are represented in the group of singers and musicians, with ages ranging from 20 to 80. The younger players excel in speed and energy, while the older ones contribute soul and experience.

‘Melodies moving faster and faster than the last, leaving listeners dazed and breathless’ (Chicago Review).
