SUN ROOMS EXTENDED
Jason Adasiewicz vibrafoon, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten bas, Mike Reed drums & guests: Eric Boeren cornet, Michael Moore altsax, Joost Buis trombone
2014 marks the 100th anniversary of Sun Ra’s birth and this is celebrated by a great band featuring musicians from Chicago and Amsterdam. This concert looks forward to the 40th anniversary of the Bimhuis this autumn.
Sun Ra, the mythical jazz pianist and band leader from Chicago, was known for his layered music full of African and Eastern influences and unusual sounds. The trio Sun Rooms from Chicago celebrates Sun Ra’s legacy in the year he would have turned 100. Sun Rooms sounds so rich and layered thanks to vibes player Jason Adasiewicz. He started out as a drummer and because of that he approaches the vibraphone like no one else. His eccentric, fierce style unleashes sounds never heard before as well as overtones from the otherwise so subtly sounding instrument.
In the second set Sun Rooms performs with renowned improvising musicians from Amsterdam. In recent years a lively interaction between the Amsterdam and Chicago improv scenes has come into being, among others via the Doek collective and Jorrit Dijkstra’s combo Pillow Circles.
‘Adasiewicz really sounds like no other vibes player, past or present… it’s a sound no one can resist: ethereal one moment, explosive the next, hauntingly lyrical after that’ (Chicago Tribune).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
