This international septet mixes familiar and unknown pieces with original music in the spirit of the groundbreaking band leader, who was named after an Egyptian sun god and who was purported to have come from Saturn. His big band, The Sun Ra Arkestra, is still fully dedicated to his futuristic, electronically enhanced jazz. The influence of Sun Ra reaches from John Coltrane to contemporary hip hop and dubstep producers. The Sun Ra Project was initiated by saxophonist André Goudbeek and trombone player Joost Buis, who has dedicated himself to Sun Ra’s music before, with his ensemble Astronotes.
