Sun-Mi Hong Quintet

Nicolo Ricci tenorsax, Alistair Payne trumpet, Chaerin Im piano, Alessandro Fongaro bass, Sun-Mi Hong drums

The Netherlands and South Korea have maintained a good diplomatic relationship for 60 years. This will be celebrated, especially since a 60 year anniversary, or Hwangap, is of great importance in Korean culture. For example, in October several Dutch musicians will perform at the Jarasum Jazz Festival in South Korea. In the same month, the BIMHUIS will host Korea Focus, a two-day festival featuring five Korean bands. The fifth one is the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet.

Her passion for drums has led her alongside many steep paths and winding roads, but in the end the Korean drummer Sun-Mi Hong established herself in Amsterdam. In her original compositions we hear catchy melodies and dramatic outbursts, alongside impressionistic patterns and irregular time signatures. In her quintet she collaborates with international super talents from the Dutch jazz scene.
