Stranger Than Paranoia brings together artists from various directions, from jazz to classical, flamenco to avant-garde, big band to string quartet and funk to improv. The festival, renowned for its innovative approach and originally founded by saxophonist Paul van Kemenade, will travel this year between Tilburg (4 nights with 3 concerts), Nijmegen and Amsterdam (1 night each with 3 concerts). The BIMHUIS welcomes three trios: Einzelgänger, Podium Trio and Vintskevich – Andrianov – Vintskevich.

Einzelgänger (German for ‘loners’) is the trio of Rotterdam trombonist Louk Boudesteijn, saxophonist Nils van Haften and guitarist Anton Goudsmit. The name says it all: these are three quirky loners. The line-up of their trio is unconventional (trombone, sax, guitar), but very flexible. Their album Musica Gymnastica can easily bend from introverted to noisy, just like their super funny YouTube clips.

For a long time the Podium Trio was one of the most prominent jazz trios in The Netherlands and in recent years they made their comeback. Their performances together with American jazz funk musicians Cornell Rochester and Jamaaladeen Tacuma were unforgettable experiences. Now the three musicians will perform in their strong basic line-up, the still unusual combination of alto sax, trombone and guitar.

Classical music and jazz fuse together in the performances of the internationally renowned trio of Leonid Vintskevich (piano), Nick Vintskevich (sax) en Boris Andrianov (cello). These musicians have made their mark in both the jazz and classical worlds; Leonid Vintskevich has collaborated with, among others, Elvin Jones and Lionel Hampton; his son Nick with Kenny Barron and Slide Hampton. Cellist Boris Andrianov plays with orchestras all over the world.
