STEVE LEHMAN TRIO

Steve Lehman altsax, Matt Brewer bas, Damion Reid drums

Steve Lehman is universally recognized as an important musical innovator, ‘one of the transforming figures of early 21st century jazz’ (The Guardian). The alto saxophonist from New York composes amazing, kaleidoscopic music, in which structures from jazz, hip hop and electronic music coalesce. During this short European tour he will introduce a handful of new compositions and arrangements.

‘Like a cutting-edge jazz orchestra remixing itself in real time’, is how Time Out described the Steve Lehman Octet, which made its European debut at the Bimhuis. In his original music he reveals similar innovative ambitions as his former teachers Jackie McLean, Anthony Braxton and Alvin Lucier. With his trio he also gives an original twist to other people’s music, such as John Coltrane’s ‘A Moment’s Notice’ or the theme song of the movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

‘Acoustic music that feels electric, or a sense of electricity snaking through an acoustic sound environment… Deeply rooted in the past, this is nonetheless modernism with an all-seeing eye on the future’ (Jazzwise).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
