STEVE LEHMAN OCTET
Steve Lehman alto sax, Jeremy Viner tenor sax, Jonathan Finlayson trumpet, Tim Albright trombone, Chris Dingman vibraphone, Jose Davila tuba, Drew Gress bass, Tyshawn Sorey drums
Steve Lehman’s Octet builds intricate musical structures, unmistakably influenced by hip-hop and contemporary electronic music. Critics agree that alto saxophonist/composer Lehman succeeds in bringing group improvisation to a higher level. The young New Yorker operates in the tradition of his former teachers Anthony Braxton and Jackie McLean. This concert is the European premiere gig of his octet, that is featured on his recent release Travail, Transformation and Flow. This acclaimed album topped the annual critics’ polls in more than thirty authoritative newspapers and magazines, such as the New York Times, Chicago Reader, JazzTimes and Village Voice. ‘A blast of urban futurism at once hypnotic, kinetic and kaleidoscopic. And funky’ (New York Times). ‘One of the most exciting saxophone voices on the current scene’ (The Wire).
AFTER THE GIG KEVIN WHITEHEAD WILL PLAY RECORDS FROM HIS COLLECTION IN THE BIMHUIS BAR
