Steve Lacy-soprano saxophone, Irene Aebi-voice, Jos Zwaanenburg-flute, John Anderson-clarinet, bass clarinet, Marieke Keser-violin, Elisabeth Smalt-viola, Anne Magde de Geus-cello, Morton Johan Olsen-drums, Frank Denyer-piano, Stefan Pliquett-bass, James Fulkerson-trombone

The Barton Workshop is an ensemble lead by James Fulkerson and specializes in (mainly American) modern classical compositions. In the series ‘Composer Portraits’, it is now the turn of soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy. His work ranges from all forms of jazz to composed/improvised pieces for classical musicians and dancers. The program revolves around ‘Traces’, a song-cycle in ten parts, based on the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. Two songs of this series can be heard on Lacy’s CD; ‘Monk’s Dream’ (with Roswell Rudd).
