New sounds and new faces will appear at the BIMHUIS at the start of the new year: the young Belgian sensation Steiger and the fresh nine-piece formation Son Swagga from Amsterdam set the tone for 2019 in this double concert.
Steiger is a piano trio, but not in the classical sense. In the past few years they traveled the Flemish venues and festivals, developing their own style in which the interaction with their surroundings provides an extra dimension. The band members all have a jazz background, but their music also touches on classical, pop and electronics and is interwoven with fascinating field recordings, reverb and ambient.
Son Swagga is the great new promise from Amsterdam. Psychedelic funk, fusion, spiritual jazz and videogame music are among the many influences of bad leader and keyboardist Felix Black. His intricate compositions get a tight performance from the nine band members, who come from the same scene as festival sensations Jungle By Night and Gallowstreet. They’re now preparing the follow-up release to their debut album Fires of Quidel.
