Spoken word and jazz come together at Spoken Beat Night. This edition features British performer Salena Godden and musician Shabaka Hutchings (Sons of Kemet).

Spoken Beat Night plays with language and turns it into music. For every edition, spoken word artist Jeannine Valeriano invites remarkable guests for an evening full of poetry, lectures, jazz, funk and live animation by ‘comic-jockeys’ Flo and Ckoe.

Poetry and short stories form the oeuvre of Salena Golden. Her writing is wry and full of humor and she’s a powerful performer who has collaborated with ska and punk bands and DJ/producers such as Coldcut. She publishes anthologies, she regularly writes for magazines and newspapers and she can be heard on BBC Radio. Her debut novel Springfield Road describes the life of the child of an Irish jazz musicians and a Jamaican go-go dancer. ‘Her writing is urgent and detailed, colourful and clamorous…’ (The Times).

Band leader, composer and reeds player Shabaka Hutchings has roots in Barbados and is part of the London experimental jazz scene in bands such as The Heliocentrics and Sons of Kemet. He shared the stage with famous players such as Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Haden and Evan Parker. As part of the Caribbean diaspora he considers himself as a musician stretching the boundaries of Caribbean music.

The young pianist and organist Matteo Mijderwijk comes from Tilburg with Jeroen van Vliet and Harmen Fraanje as his main teachers. In his current hometown of Amsterdam, he works in various artistic disciplines such as dance, theater and film.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.00 till 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
