SPINIFEX – Spinifex Sings
Priya Purushothaman, Björk Nielsdottir vocals, Tobias Klein alto sax, Bart Maris trumpet, John Dikeman tenor sax, Jasper Stadhouders guitar, Gonçalo Almeida bass, Philipp Moser drums
Spinifex gets its tongue around a new project: Spinifex Sings, featuring singer Priya Purushothaman from Mumbai, and Icelandic vocalist Björk Níelsdóttir. With its typically tight, intense, and polymorphous style, the Spinifex band will now explore vocal music, somewhere between spiky songs, lyricism, and primal scream.
Priya Purushothaman and Björk Níelsdóttir are both among the most promising voices of their generation, Priya in the area of North Indian classical music, and Björk in the area of contemporary, classical and improvised music. Spinifex, named after a tough Australian species of grass, may at first sound like a combination of jazzcore, metal and other Western contemporary music. However, beneath the surface the listener will discover ancient cyclical rhythms from the East.
