SPINIFEX

PRESENTATION CD: HIPSTERS GONE BALLISTIC

Gijs Levelt trompet, Tobias Klein altsaxofoon, Jasper Stadhouders elektrische gitaar, Gonçalo Almeida basgitaar, Philipp Moser drums

Spinifex Quintet is a new flexible band with a fearsomely explosive combination of musicians. Like its older brother the Spinifex Orchestra it is all about compelling grooves, strong dynamics and challenging improvisations.

Spinifex, named after a tough Australian species of grass, may at first sound like a combination of jazzcore, metal and other typically Western contemporary music. However, beneath the surface the listener will discover ancient cyclical rhythms from Turkish and India musical cultures.

Drummer and astrophysician Philipp Moser is known for his work with Dutch progressive metal band Cilice. Guitarist Jasper Stadhouders sets the tone in the Amsterdam underground, for example as a member of Cactus Truck. The Portuguese, Rotterdam-based bass player Gonçalo Almeida switches effortlessly between a beautifully rounded sound and heavy electric distortion. They describe their new work as ‘extremely tight irregular structures and extensive free improvising.’

‘The irregular rhythms in this patchwork of styles continue with relentless energy… the math metal synergy shines through the tight changes which are fascinatingly intertwined with wild solos’ (de Volkskrant).

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
