SONS OF KEMET

Shabaka Hutchings sax/klarinet, Oren Marshall tuba, Tom Skinner drums, Seb Rochford drums

Everything that makes contemporary UK jazz so exciting is summed up in the irresistible, danceable music of Sons Of Kemet. Band leader, saxophonist and clarinet player Shabaka Hutchings, known as a member of The Heliocentrics and chosen as BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, employs a wealth of styles for his colorful compositions. Aside from the eccentric tuba player Oren Marshall the trio contains no less than two drummers: Seb Rochford (Polar Bear, Brian Eno) en Tom Skinner (Mulatu Astatke).
This band has a unique line-up, as well as a unique style based on three important fundaments: jazz, parade music from New Orleans, Arabian scales and Albert Ayler-like passionate solos, brought together in one overwhelming, danceable mix.

‘A wall of head-spinning sounds’ (JazzWise).

September 2013 Sons of Kemet received the MOBO AWARD for Best Jazz Act 2013.
