Thanks to the Hungarian band Söndörgö there is renewed interest in the tambura, the mandolin-like plucked instrument which has a history going back to 16th century Balkan. The contemporary tambura players of Söndörgö honor the Slavic folk tradition which was documented by composers Béla Bartók and Tihamér Vujicsics. The five musicians alternate lively dances with melancholic melodies on tamburas of various sizes, combined with brass instruments and accordion. ‘One of Europe’s most versatile and exciting bands’ (Songlines).
