SHABAKA
Friday3 May 2024

The London jazz scene is in the midst of a true renaissance, with composer and bandleader SHABAKA leading the way. Influenced on the one hand by his classical clarinet studies at the Guildhall School of Music in London and on the other by grime, house, jungle and dub from the London underground, SHABAKA moves between genres like no other.

After successes as a tenor saxophonist and bandleader of great bands like Sons of Kemet, The Comet is Coming and Shabaka and The Ancestors, SHABAKA decides to say goodbye to the saxophone as of now and continue on different flutes, such as the East Asian Shakuhachi. His latest album, Afrikan Culture, is his first solo album on the prestigious Impulse!, the legendary label behind the spiritual jazz of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders. Now he returns to our venue with a new quintet and a new album called Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace, which features big names like Esperanza Spalding, Moses Sumney and even André 3000.
