PLAY THE MUSIC OF HORACE SILVER
Stefon Harris vibes, Edward Simon piano, Mark Turner saxophones, Robin Eubanks trombone, Avishai Cohen trumpet, Miguel Zenón alto saxophone/flute, Matt Penman bass, Eric Harland drums
All-star band is quite an understatement for the SFJAZZ Collective, which was founded in 2004 and has since featured Joshua Redman, Dave Douglas, Nicholas Payton and Bobby Hutcherson. Every year the octet plays new arrangements by a different master composer. After such distinguished predecessors that include Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk, Horace Silver is the featured composer this year. The 2010 line-up of SFJAZZ includes newcomers Mark Turner (saxophone) and Avishai Cohen (trumpet). All members are excellent composers, band leaders and soloists, who regularly end up high in the Downbeat polls.
