The Russians are coming! is a program put together in consultation with pianist, composer, ‘Muscovite’ and cosmopolitan Simon Nabatov and the music programmers of the Moskow Cultural Centre DOM. A few of the most important Russian improvisors of the last three decades come together in a series of short performances, form solo to sextet, from a couple of minutes to a full set. Some parts of the program are prepared, others will be instantly composed on the concert night. The musicians share a deeply rooted interest in the Russian tradition of folk music which influences you can always detect in their own work. Whether it is about the Moscow Art Trio (with Shilkloper and Starostin), the repertoire of Simon Nabatov inspired by Russian literature or Evelyn Petrova’s Year’s Cycle, with which she did her Bimhuis debut and made a huge impression during the opening program of the new building.
