Sélène Saint-Aimé’s new music is both poetic and autobiographical. Her first name Sélène refers to the Greek goddess of the full moon. And the title of her album Mare Undarum (sea of waves) is derived from a lunar mare – a basaltic crater located on Earth’s moon formed by a volcanic eruption. The album was inspired by the beauty of the moon, as well as the composer’s own life.
Sélène Saint-Aimé mixes vocals and double bass in her music, which is influenced by Paris, where she currently lives, as well as by her Afro-Caribbean roots. She studied with legendary double bassists Ron Carter and Lonnie Plaxico, and with composer and musical innovator Steve Coleman. Mare Undarum combines original compositions with ‘re-compositions’ of works by Steve Coleman, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Modest Mussorgsky.
