Schlippenbach trio ft. Rudi Mahall & Dag Magnus Narvesen
Wednesday15 May 2024

This concert was originally planned for January 2024 and has been moved to May 15th.

For fifty years, Alexander Von Schlippenbach went on a European tour every winter with his trio. This year the German pianist will once again embark on such a ‘Winterreise’, but with a renewed ensemble. German clarinettist Rudi Mahall has performed on our stage with Der Rote Bereich and Globe Unity Orchestra. Norwegian drummer Dag Magnus Narvesen previously collaborated with Von Schlippenbach on Liminal Field, a duo album full of uncompromising improvisations.

The Alexander Von Schlippenbach Trio stood at the foundation of European improvised music in the late 1960s. Each of their concerts is a completely new journey of discovery for the trio, yet recognizable elements remain. The piano playing of Alexander Von Schlippenbach combines influences of Thelonious Monk’s jazz with principles of Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve tone music, among many other things.

‘Staggering technique married to pure instinct’ (The Wire about the Alexander Von Schlippenbach Trio).
