SAM RIVERS TRIO & STEVEN BERNSTEIN DIASPORA BLUES

80 year old free jazz veteran Sam Rivers is one of the most complete musicians of the avant-garde scene. He recorded a series of legendary Blue Note records, he was a member of the groups of Miles Davis (’64) and Cecil Taylor (’68-’73) and with his Studio Rivbea, he was the pioneer of the New York loft scene in the seventies. Rivers has managed to maintain a high level of creativity over a long life. His sound is hard and extraordinarily well-centered, his articulation sharp and he has complete command of the tenor saxophone. His collaboration with Sex Mob leading man Steven Bernstein finds its roots in the musical inheritance of chazzanut Moshe Koussevitsky, one of the most important Jewish cantors of the past century. In a subtle an surprising way, Bernstein and Rivers use the similarities between Koussevitsky’s music and the blues that are lying under the surface.
