Sam Newbould Quintet & Alex Hitchcock Quintet

Exciting encounters between the new British and Dutch jazz scenes.

Rising stars Sam Newbould and Alex Hitchcock deliberately break the post-Brexit-trend by looking for collaborations between up-and-coming British and Dutch jazz musicians. In this double bill they proudly present their results. Sam Newbould is a British alto saxophonist who’s active in The Netherlands, and Alex Hitchcock is making name as a tenorist in the flourishing London scene.

Saxophonist San Newbould is becoming a fixture in the Dutch jazz scene and has formed a quintet with international players who are active here as well. Influences from Radiohead, Wayne Shorter, English folk and twentieth century classical music are assimilated into lush harmonies with the energy of progressive rock. Now the group will preview the upcoming album Homing, which will be released in May.

‘Ridiculous technique and harmonic proficiency combined with this progressive creativity that sees him leading the charge in terms of new jazz music in the UK’, said BBC Jazz World about Alex Hitchcock, one of the most noteworthy tenor saxophonists of his country. It’s telling that big names such as Shai Maestro, Linda May Han Oh and Kendrick Scott are happy to play on his albums. With his quintet he combines rhythmic drive and catchy themes with energetic improvisations.
