The eight-piece Rumi Ensemble is dedicated to the ancient poetry of sufi mystic Jalal ad-Din Rumi. The musicians from Iran, Norway and Sweden have been together since 2007, the year in which Rumi’s 800th birthday was celebrated all over the world. Special guest is Iranian singer and flute player Mohammad Motamedi.

The poems of Rumi are energetic, rhythmic and ecstatic, according to band leader Javid Afsari Rad, and they are very well suited for progressive musical treatment. He composed music for old Persian instruments and Western string instruments, which come together in this ensemble.

Mohammad introduces the music with voice and ney, the Persian flute. His long melody lines are carried on by violin, viola and cello. Percussion and ud, the Arabian lute, provide contrast. Javid Afsari Rad leads the ensemble on santur, the Persian hammered dulcimer.

The concert will consist of one set, without intermission.

The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
