RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA BIRD CALLS
WITH ADAM O’FARRILL, FRANÇOIS MOUTIN, JOSHUA WHITE & RUDY ROYSTON
Rudresh Mahanthappa altsax, Adam O’Farrill trompet, Bobby Avey piano, Thomson Kneeland bas, Rudy Royston drums
Innovative jazz in the spirit of bop legend Charlie Parker, by
Indian-American alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, winner in the
Downbeat Critics Poll 2016.
For his album Bird Calls, Rudresh
Mahanthappa composed new music inspired by his great example on alto
saxophone, Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker. 95 years after his birth, Bird is
mainly being praised for pioneering bebop, but Mahanthappa shows that
his influences reaches further. Instead of playing Charlie Parker’s
compositions, Mahanthappa chooses innovation, something Bird would have
wanted. At the Bimhuis he plays with renowned musicians from New York.
With
his fresh, energetic synthesis of ancient Indian music and contemporary
jazz, Rudresh Mahanthappa enchants press and audiences alike. His
playing encapsulates ‘Sanborn’s lustrous tone and Parker’s rhythmic
agility’ (Washington Post) and he has been voted best alto saxophonist
in the Downbeat Critics Poll for years, including 2016.
‘A true progressive in contemporary improvised music (Jazzwise).
