ROY NATHANSON’S SOTTO VOCE
Roy Nathanson-saxphones, vocals, Napoleon Maddox-Human Beat Box, vocals, Curtis Fowlkes-trombone, Sam Bardfeld-violin, vocals, Jim Whitney-bass, vocals
The eccentric, as warm as satirical music of the Jazz Passengers, lead by Roy Nathanson and Curtis Fowlkes, belongs to the most amusing and original jazz of the past two decades. Fowlkes shows up again in Nathanson’s new band in which the voice is playing a key role. The trombone player croons, the ‘human beatbox’ delivers oral hip-hop percussion, there is spoken word and close harmony, not to forget a vocal version of Roland Kirk’s The Inflated Tear, all framed by inventive arrangements.
