ROY HARGROVE QUINTET
Roy Hargrove trompet/bugel, Justin Robinson altsax/fluit, Sullivan Fortner piano, Ameen Saleem bas, Quincy Phillips drums
One of today’s greatest trumpet players returns to the Bimhuis after four years. ‘He has a flaring tone and a lyrical warmth’ (The Guardian).
It’s always a special treat whenever a star of the calibre of Roy Hargrove performs on the Bimhuis stage. The American trumpet player was one of the headliners of North Sea Jazz last year and it has already been four years since he last captivated the Bimhuis with his impressive tone. Jazz and bop are important factors in his music, which often diverges surprisingly towards funk, hip-hop and Latin.
As a teenager he started his career playing with Wynton Marsalis and he soon chose his own path. Roy Hargrove finds his way in every genre, from big band jazz to R&B, proving himself to be a worthy successor of fellow trumpet players such as Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard. Aside from his solo-career he has made remarkable guest appearances on albums by Erykah Badu, D’Angelo and John Mayer.
‘He’s never been short of hipness… he has a flaring tone and a lyrical warmth… his fusing of traditional and contemporary music turns his gigs into exuberant jazz history lessons’ (The Guardian).
