The creative tension between composition and collective improvisation is the strong point of the influential ROVA Saxophone Quartet from San Francisco, founded in 1977 and specialized in mixing post-bop, free jazz, avant-rock and modern composed music. In ROVA Special Sextet the four saxophonists collaborate with master drummers Tony Buck (of The Necks, Peril) and Michael Vatcher, known for his colourful playing with such acts as Available Jelly, Braam/DeJoode/Vatcher and countless projects by Michael Moore. ‘The Rova Saxophone Quartet is an equivalent of the Kronos String Quartet: both are San Francisco foursomes devoted to new music with a vernacular twist.’ (The New York Times).
