Layered soundscapes fusing digital electronics and traditional Turkish harp. Featuring composer Erdem Helvacioğlu and harpist Şirin Pancaroğlu.

Resonating Universes is a listening experience that gives new meaning to the term ‘harp music’. With this performance composer and musician Erdem Helvacioğlu combines contemporary electronica with the Ottoman harp, which will be played by leading Turkish harpist Şirin Pancaroğlu.

The concert starts with traditional works, performed by Pancaroğlu and singer Bora Uymaz. After a short break, the programme continues with Helvacioğlu’s work Resonating Universes. Part of the electronic component is made up of pre-recorded and digitally manipulated harp parts, played by Pancaroğlu using bows, ropes and even knives – anything to elicit the desired sounds. At the concert, electronic processing of the instrument’s live sound is added to the mix, forging complex, layered soundscapes of contrasting worlds which endlessly resound in each other.

Erdem Helvacioğlu is an important representative of electronic music in Turkey. Alongside solo performances on guitar and electronica he collaborates with countless artists from both classical and pop music. His music has been performed by among others Bang On A Can All-Stars and has been reviewed positively in international media including The Wire and Pitchfork. Şirin Pancaroğlu is among the most prominent contemporary harp players in Turkey. She’s an active ambassador of the çeng, the traditional Turkish harp that was highly popular in the Ottoman era.
