JOHN MARSHALL, ABRAHAM BURTON, BENJAMIN HERMAN & REIN DE GRAAFF TRIO

A BLOWIN’ SESSION

John Marshall trompet, Abraham Burton tenorsax, Benjamin Herman altsax, Rein de Graaff piano, Marius Beets bas, Eric Ineke drums

‘Prof. Bop’ Rein de Graaff has brought over jazz heroes from the States to the Netherlands for decades now. This time trumpet player John Marshall and tenor player Abraham Burton are invited for ‘A Blowin’ Session’ with De Graaff’s piano trio, spurred on by none other than Benjamin Herman on alto saxophone.

John Marshall has played in New York for 20 years with celebrated jazz players such as Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie and Ornette Coleman. These days he’s the principal trumpet soloist in one of the best big bands in the world, the WDR Big Band. ‘Boppish fluidity and harmonic sophistication… as if Clifford Brown and Buck Clayton had joined forces. Marshall has a lovely tone, his phrases seem fresh’ (Cadence).

The powerful tenor playing by Abraham Burton has often been compared to that of John Coltrane. ‘Fearless and exquisite’, is how Downbeat described Burton’s solos. The New York-based musician plays in the Mingus Big Band, with which he recorded the Grammy-winning album Live at Jazz Standard from 2011. He forms the remarkable trio Aethereal Bace with his childhood friends Nasheet Waits and Eric McPherson, two powerhouse drummers. As a band leader he released various albums on the renowned Enja label.
