Like most saxophone players Ravi Coltrane cannot evade the influence of his father John, even though he is generally renowned for his own forward-thinking style. His sixth solo CD Spirit Fiction is his first on Blue Note, the label behind his father’s legendary album Blue Train (1957). Downbeat praises this new step forward towards ‘a gentle sort of free playing’. Ravi’s current band features Cuban piano talent David Virelles. ‘Music of considerable depth and warmth’ (Jazz Times).
