RASHIED ALI QUINTET

Jumaane Smith-trumpet, Lawrence Clark-tenor saxophone, Greg Murphy-piano, Joris Teepe-bass, Rashied Ali-drums

In 1966 Rashied Ali replaced Elvin Jones in John Coltrane’s group. After that Coltrane and Ali recorded the impressive duo album Interstellar Space (1967). The collaboration with Coltrane will always stick to Rashied Ali´s name but not so known is that this drummer has been traveling a highly interesting, original progressive jazz road. Various artists like Alice Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean and James ‘Blood’ Ulmer worked with Ali. With his own quintet, with Dutch New Yorker Joris Teepe on bass, Rashied Ali still proves that he is a musical force to reckon with.
