Somewhere between Monk and Messiaen lies the world of Ran Blake. An unique world in which blues, gospel and instant composing go together with techniques and renewed sounds from the 20th century concert music. Around 1960 Blake was one of the first exponents of the Third Stream, the fusion of jazz and classical music, strived after by Gunther Schuller. Blake’s work is very expressive, especially when he is inspired by film noir sound tracks. ‘Ran Blake is so hip it hurts… a pianist who can make you laugh at his wry humor one second and wring a tear the next.’ (DownBeat).
