PLAISTOW
Johann Bourquenez piano, Vincent Ruiz bass, Cyril Bondi drums
Minimal music and electronica influence the purely acoustic music of Plaistow, the band named after a track by Squarepusher. ‘New and original. Post-jazz.’ (Brian Morton, The Wire).
Swiss band Plaistow is one of the greatest musical discoveries of recent years. Its line-up, with piano, double bass and drums, seems conventional, but the music proves otherwise. With acoustic instruments they create unique experimental music influenced by minimalism, dub and electronica. The band was named after a Squarepusher track and has drawn comparisons with Steve Reich, Philip Glass, The Necks, Rabih-Abou Khalil, Plastikman, Mad Professor and many more. According to critics Plaistow’s recent album Titan is their crowning achievement.
‘Titan is Plaistow’s masterpiece. The compositions, from beautifully restrained to pushing and pulling the listener in all directions, are utterly convincing. They find their ways to your head and heart in inscrutable ways’ (Written in Music).
‘While Plaistow play with the most conventional of means – piano, bass, drums rather than laptops – they do so in quite new and original ways. Post-jazz.’ (Brian Morton, The Wire).
