Saxophone player Jorrit Dijkstra’s self-styled suite Pillow Circles alternates dreamy passages and cutting-edge sequences. The composition was originally commissioned by the North Sea Jazz Festival. Dijkstra selected improvisers from Amsterdam, New York and Chicago to perform the music. Alongside their primary instruments they will also play analogue electronic gear, such as the crackle box by audio pioneer Michel Waisvisz. Pillow Circles is dedicated to adventurous musicians like Fred Frith and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood. ‘Very soft and extremely hectic parts, melodic and orchestrated parts alongside abstract explorations, dissonant riffs on the lyricon (synthesizer saxophone) and rock rhythms.’ (Volkskrant).
