Dazzling playing, a recognizable tone, a sound that is sharp as a knife and intense ballads: these are the elements that characterize alto player Piet Noordijk (Rotterdam, 1935). In 1965 he received the Wessel Ilcken Prize and in 1987 the Bird Award. Like the title of his most recent album indicates; the emphasis is on a solid soulful groove. The legendary Misha Mengelberg/Piet Noordijk Quartet was active between 1962-1967. The group played the Newport Jazz Festival in 1966 (the only European band at that time among American colleagues like Duke Ellington, Count Basie and John Coltrane). Noordijk’s new bobtet closes the evening and will set the foundation for a ‘session’ with musicians/friends. Instead of the regular a la carte menu there will be a buffet in the Bimhuiscafé-restaurant, from 7pm, euro 15 (reservations +31 (0)20 788 2158)
