PIERRE BASTIEN PHILIP JECK
i.a.w. Theater Lantaren/Venster
Creator of an Orchestre Mécanique, his orchestra of automata that seem to have escaped straight from a film by Michel Gondry. Pierre Basstien is a beloved member of the experimental music world, with fans such as Squarepusher and Aphex Twin. His concerts are exceptional experiences both in sonic and visual terms. The Amsterdam programme 3 voor 12 wrote in a review of his Bimhuis performance during Amsterdam Dance Event ’07: “Pierre Basstien is at his best when he adds a bit of warmth with a harmonium-like instrument to his subtle rhythmic experiments and then blending in his own thin line of muted trumpet.” Philip Jeck, well known for his performance piece Vinyl Requiem, for 180 record players, 12 slide projectors and 2 film projectors, for which he received the 1993 de Time Out Performance Award, combines samples, loops and scratches in his work from various analogue sources. In sonic terms Jeck’s music resembles the dubstep phenomenon Burial, but his free and abstract form betrays more affinity to the work of Christian Marclay.
