GALLERY OF TONES / PIANOLAB
ARMENIAN/ANATOLIAN ROOTS IN THE MUSIC OF PAUL MOTIAN
Dante Boon, Stevko Busch, Harry Tavitian piano, Vahe Hovanesian duduk, Tom Arthurs trumpet, Jan Bang electronics, Samuel Rohrer drums
Amsterdam-based pianists meet renowned international guests during Gallery Of Tones/Pianolab. This year’s point of departure is the distinctive style and sonic universe of Paul Motian (1931-2011). This American percussionist is famous for his unique, spatial style of playing, combining Western, Afro-American and Eastern influences.
From this vantage point the invited musicians will improvise with Eastern and Western coloring, phrasing and timing. A crucial part is taken by the masterful live electronics of Jan Bang. The program features three pianists in various roles. In his solo performance the Rumanian-Armenian pianist Harry Tavitian will approach Armenian music from a jazz perspective. Dutch concert pianist Dante Boon uses Eastern sources in compositions from different periods. German pianist Stevko Busch, the initiator of Pianolab, will give a performance with a remarkable quartet.
