Philipp Gropper’s PHILM | Ragnarök Trio
Friday24 November 2023

This double concert by Philm and the Ragnarök Trio is all about energy and raw improvisation. PHILM is the band of tenor saxophonist and composer Philipp Gropper. Its layered themes and shifting rhythms lead to music that sounds different from jazz as we know it, although there are similarities. Band leader Philipp Gropper, for instance, masters the sounds of great tenor saxophonists of the past, but deliberately steers them in unexpected directions. Philm’s previous performance on our stage earned a standing ovation and was recorded on the acclaimed album Live at Bimhuis.

The Ragnarök Trio is a Netherlands-based trio led by Icelandic guitarist Thorkell Ragnar. The trio brings a mix of original compositions and free improvisations to the stage, full of energy and with a lot of room for experiment. Horkell’s music is raw and sincere, with the addition of 20th-century compositional techniques such as serialism and atonality. The Ragnarök Trio is completed by Dutch Jesse Schilderink on tenor sax and Jens Meijer on drums.
