PHIL WOODS QUARTET
Phil Woods-alto sax, Rein de Graaff-piano, Jos Machtel-bass, John Engels-drums
**PROGRAM CHANGE** Due to circumstances the European tour of the Phil Woods Quintet has been cancelled. However, Phil Woods has been found willing to travel from the United States to play the Bimhuis concert, in wich he plays with drummer John Engels, bass player Jos Machtel and pianist Rein the Graaff. A few tickets available. Phil Woods is one of worthiest heirs to the throne of Charlie Parker and for decades has been the torchbearer of the inventiveness and passion that characterises true bebop. When Woods plays bebop, it seems like this genre was invented yesterday, even though over the past 50 years he has developed into a personality with his own unique, contemporary sound. De Volkskrant wrote of his Bimhuis debut in 2005: ‘Woods is a consummate professional, but certainly no boring old fart. He ended the evening with a heartrending rendition of ‘Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?’ Woods played a gorgeous, old-fashioned light-hearted solo full of love for the drowned city.’
