New quartet with key members of the improv scenes of Amsterdam and New York. A union of two duos, who each showcase a seemingly telepathic interplay.
Through years of dedicated playing each of these four musicians are conscious of their own weight and power to add to the communal conversation, understanding silence and restraint can be as powerful a contribution to the whole as density. This year they will perform in this line-up for the first time: the duo Ab Baars and Ig Henneman from Amsterdam and the musical partners Ingrid Laubrock and Tom Rainey from Brooklyn, New York.
As separate band leaders they are leading voices in the world of Dutch jazz and improvisation. Viola player Ig Henneman and multi-reedist Ab Baars have been playing together since the 1980s and since 1999 have been performing as an internationally renowned duo. Ingrid Laubrock is a saxophone player of the most adventurous breed. She moved on from Germany to London and eventually found her natural habitat in the downtown scene of New York where she performs in various bands with leading percussionist Tom Rainey, ‘a drummer of great intricacy and subtlety’ (The Wire).
