Soul’Afrique’s main focus is on the passionate jazz from the townships of South Africa. , with its collaboration between the Paul van Kemenade Quintet and three South African jazz musicians. They have been regularly touring together for 20 years and now they celebrate their friendship with an exuberant anniversary, with a series of concerts in The Netherlands and South Africa.
In 1994 the Paul van Kemenade Quintet gave 25 concerts in South Africa. Their seven week journey took place during the time that Nelson Mandela was voted president, and laid the foundation for the intensive exchange between the musicians that have been invited for this anniversary: the lyrical trumpet player, Feya Faku, the energetic tenor saxophonist Sydney Mnisi and the excellent guitarist Louis Mhlanga.
‘Alto saxophonist Paul van Kemenade would not be out of place in one of the volcanic groups of Charles Mingus, considering his passion, the highly personal ‘cry’ in his playing, the relentless swing and the blues feel’ (de Volkskrant).
‘His alto darts and dives luxuriously, a rainbow feathered bird of paradise riding to the stratosphere’ (Downbeat, *****-review of Van Kemenade’s album Close Enough).
The Bimhuis restaurant is open prior to the concert from 6.30 til 8.30PM (reservations via 020-7882158). After the concert, the Bimhuis Café is open (free entrance).
