Paul Termos passed away five years ago. As a saxophone player and improvisor he played with Guus Janssen, Maarten Altena and Misha Mengelberg. As a composer he used simple chords, scales and repetitive patterns to create gripping, angular music, studiously devoid of excess. Last May a Termos-Festival took place at several impro-venues in Amsterdam (Zaal 100, Boog 29, De Drie Gebroeders, Badcuyp, OT301, WGpunt), at which about forty musicians played three of Termos’ ‘Aanzetten tot Improvisaties’. Several of these musicians will play a concert tonight in the name of Termos. ‘He may very well be remembered primarily as a composer. Yet (…) Termos was also a formidable improvisor’ (The Wire). Between the two concerts DJ Philippona will spin records from Paul Termos collection. At the café-restaurant there will be a photo-exposition by Francesca Patella about the Termos-Festival. With support of the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst. Tonight the Bimhuis cafe-restaurant will be serving a buffet menu instead of its usual a-la-carte menu (€ 15, from 18.30). Reservations recommended: 020-7882158.
